The water world eventually became a diverse and plentiful world in which algae, bacteria, and all types of smelly things swam around and ate each other. Some of these early organisms eventually grew branches and turned into walking trees.

The walking trees were extremely horny and reproduced quickly. They swallowed up all of the water and, eventually, they began to fight for resources—exposure to sunlight, liquid H2O, carbon dioxide. There were all kinds of drama, mostly instigated by the trickster, during which some trees had to grow sideways just to get away from their kin.
